Team Filson was started in 2019, by THS graduate Mallory Cardner, Class of 2015. In her own words: “I started Team Filson the moment I learned of Coach Filson’s diagnosis. I struggled a lot in high school, but was lucky enough to have met Coach Filson my freshman year while playing soccer. Little did I know that I’d end up visiting his classroom just about every day for all of high school. His door was always open, and his advice was life saving! He continued to be a mentor and friend throughout my college career at UT, and even inspired me to pursue my degree in Psychology. During his treatment, we raised money for incidental costs, and gathered cards, letters, memories, and photos, all of which his family now has in a special scrapbook that they can hold onto and cherish. After his passing, his wife Pam reached out and asked if we could establish a scholarship at THS in his name. My obvious answer was yes, but getting there was a massive community effort! After months of fundraising and getting the word out there, we finally raised enough money to begin funding a $1000.00 scholarship for one student each year, for the next 10 years (with the possibility of extending the number of years we can fund it). I have to give the biggest thank you to the Team Filson supporters who have come together in support of a truly wonderful man.”
